Soothing the Spirit with CHAMOMILE

Banishing worry, anxiety, and stress with flower magick
HAIL CHAMOMILE, Matricaria chamomilla,

gentle and delicate,
blooming with soothing spirit
in garden and meadow.

I call upon you to ease the tension
so that I may exist in bliss.

Summon around me
an atmosphere
of halcyon days.

Bid my dreams to be serene,
my rest to be effortless,
and my thoughts to be tranquil.

Expel the worry
and remove any hexes
that may have clung to my body,
my home,
my community,
or my world
so that we may all sit in joyful peace.

Aho! Hail and Welcome!
The original print issue of 52 Petals: CHAMOMILE from 2021

Remove any hexes that may have clung to my body...

Sitting down to write this newsletter I knew I wanted to return to the graceful realm of the Flowers. I've been incredibly anxious this month so I turned to the flowers I know as masters soothers - Lavender and Chamomile. I read through the two invocations and the line above about removing hexes jumped out at me. I don't know if the unsettled, frazzled energy I've been experiencing this month is a hex but I figured I should cover all my bases. I believe I've been hexed before, and it took some serious petitioning of my guides and an intentional walk through a graveyard to dispel it. I didn't know about the hex breaking powers of Chamomile back then.

In a practical sense, there are reasonable things to be stressed about. The wider reality of where I live is harrowing. I read today that federal funding of public media was rescinded in a vote by Congress. The implications of that make my stomach turn with worry. There is a constant murmur of grief and terror for my friends and community that are trans or immigrants. Circling closer I have my own family to worry about, with some stressful life transitions underway. And then the existential dread of choosing this life of an artist and witch in a system that prioritizes and protects neither.

I am overriding the fears and showing up more and more for my art and vision as my son grows more independent. This weekend I am participating in my first street market since before he was born. I am all jitters in preparation for the event. What if no one buys anything? What if someone targets the event? What if I forget something I need? What if.. What if.. What if... My mind is a jumble and I am tired of the anxious harpies running the show. I'm drinking Chamomile tea tonight before bed, and bringing a thermos with me to sip and soothe throughout the day.

I appreciate you witnessing my inner dialogue as I turn to Chamomile to shift the narrative.

Teabag Magick with Chamomile

Teabags are an extremely useful way to store herbs and flowers in the home. Many edible flowers can be found in the tea aisle of most grocery stores, and the boxes are easy to store. Chamomile is one such tea, but many of these ideas will work for other teas like Dandelion, Rose, Lavender, or Hibiscus. Always check for allergies or possible reactions before working with a new flower ally.

Tea- Brewing and drinking tea mindfully can be a simple way to end or begin rituals. Stir clockwise to call in energies, and stir counterclockwise to banish negativity.

Bath- Steeping teabags in a bath is a quick way to enhance ritual bathing with the essence of flowers. It adds a luxurious fragrance to the experience, plus is easy to dispose so that your tub isn’t dirtied by loose petals.

Face- Chamomile is soothing to skin. Steep in a basin and then rest over the steam with a towel over your head. Relax for at least 5 minutes. Perfect for glamour magick.

Spray- Brew tea and allow to cook completely. Place in a spray bottle with corresponding stones. Spritz around your room or house to imbue the air with calm and clear energy.

Charms- Cut open tea bags to use the dried tea in potion bottles, magick sachets, poppets, or to sprinkle around the boundary of ritual spaces.

Practical Magick for Positive Associations

I sit and stir my tea counterclockwise to banish the unease. I sip the honey apple sweet of the delicate brew and let the petals work their magick. It might take a few cups to melt the stress a way, but I trust in the power of chamomile. When I was stuck in the hospital for a week after my son was born chamomile tea was one of the only magickal allies I could rely on. At times I was on drugs, which I am thankful for because they prevented stroke and seizure, that I was only allowed clear liquids on. Chamomile tea was one such liquid and it fortified and soothed me in the midst of all the hospital discomfort. Thankfully now I still have a positive association with Chamomile after the whole ordeal, turning to the tea when life feels in a spiral.

Last month I also created a mystical Mist Spray inspired by the writings in 52 Ripples. I've found it to be very uplifting and inspiring with a base of Mugwort. But I've had difficulty with the allyship of Mugwort in the past, so I think I want to remake the spray with Chamomile as the base instead and see if this suits me better.

Cross Pollination- a sharing of current musings and inspirations.

  • The endlessly motivating Cody Cook-Parrott recently polled their readership about the tools they use to maintain an online presence in a survey called TECH STACK. Everyone who participated received access to the answers and one of the resources shared was called hotglue.me. As a visual person this website builder seems very compelling. Its collage-oriented web design! And fun and quirky to use. I've been wanting to rebuild my site (just one more thing to feed the anxiety monster...) and move away from wix for a long time, and this might be a fun solution.

  • You may have noticed I have a deep and abiding love for Zines. I feel that Zines are powerful, especially in this moment of federal cuts to arts funding. Earlier this month is occurred to me that I should see if there are any good discord servers for the zine community and I found three. I've already connected with cool people there for trades and sharing advice, and a few folks even live in Colorado! If you like zines you might want to check out ZINE CRISIS, Zines and Zinesters, and Zine Grrlz. I also have a channel dedicated to Zines on the Creative Coven Discord, but its pretty sleepy. Stop by and share some of your favorites!

  • This video about Bhutan's future city is incredibly Solarpunk and gives me hope. I'll be curious to see how the project unfolds and affects the global stage.
