Activate my senses of intuition
so that the flow of the unseen world
unfolds before me, l
inking me to my ancestor,
to all benevolent beings,
and to the current of the cosmos.
Hail and Welcome!
My ancestors have been near.
When I woke up from brain surgery back in September I felt an intense clarity around what I need to do next. I need to make altars.
To make altars and shrines specifically in collaboration with other people- to tap into the web of sacred energy that flows in and out of all things. To create with anyone wanting to anchor and ground the sacred into their rites of passage and events. To express my constellation of wisdom and expertise through creative, interactive, beautiful spaces.
My ancestors are calling and I am listening. Once the pinprick intensity of the moment wore off, and the work of recovery began, I faltered a bit. I did not know how to begin this new quest of Altar and Shrine building. I have made altars and shrines many times before. I’ve made interactive sacred space at festivals and events. I refresh my home altars and crafted pop-up travel altars. But this new venture felt different. It felt as though my ancestors were crowding round to watch what I would make of the imperative.
I call upon Nuummite to reveal the path laid out by the ancestral callings that rattle across my skin and rumble through my dreams.
When writing about Nuummite back in 2020 I learned a lot about the different types of psychic intuition. I learned that there are different kinds of clear knowing, the ability to perceive and interpret energetic impressions. When messages from the unseen come to me I just know. I don’t hear anything or see anything. I thought I should be seeing lights or hearing whispers but I was not. I simple have a body sense to pay attention. I now know this is called claircognizance, rather than the more known clairvoyance or clear sight.
I break down different kinds of psychic intuition for paid subscribers with the full zine at the end of this newsletter.
To honor my ancestors, and myself, I went on a silent walk for the eight days between Halloween and my Birthday. My goal was to gather signs and omens. Each day I would venture out with an intention to receive a “message” from the natural world. Each day I would start walking and begin to doubt if a message would appear. And each day there was a pregnant moment and I would know, this… this is the message. Each of them are still being interpreted and I imagine they will become more clear as the months go on. I intended for each day to be a message for the seasons: Day one for Samhain. Day two for Yule, and so on.
After the final day, as I was journaling about the experience, it dawned on me that I needed to experience and visit other shrines in the real world. I went to google and typed “Local Shrine.” The shrine for Saint Frances Cabrini appeared. The shrine was forty five minutes away in Golden. She is a Saint of Immigrants, which so many of my family have been. And her feast day was the very next day! Despite my Catholic heritage I’ve never been to Mass, let alone a feast day. Despite my hesitations, I went.
The Shrine was beautiful and very practical. The Mother Cabrini Shrine is a generous campus at the top of the mesa. It houses a hermitage, chapel, gift shop, sacred spring, museum, and several meditative walking paths. The shrine is tucked below the parking lot with a space for prayer and a candle vending machine. While exploring the grounds I was struck with the notion that “All my ancestors are God.”
It has been several weeks and I am still ruminating on what this means to me exactly and how it connects to the need to make Altars and Shrines. I trust that as I continue towards this the mysteries will unravel. In the meantime I will continue making home altars and shrines. I leave you with a practice for making your own Ancestor Altar in these last weeks of Samhain season from the Nuummite issue of 52 Facets.
Create an Ancestor Altar with Nuummite
Nuummite heightens our awareness of those who have come before us, our ancestors. One way to work with and honor your Ancestors is to create an altar in their honor. Whether you know your lineage or not, this can become a powerful place to connect with your history.
Gather Images and Objects that are from your family, or remind you of your heritage.
Choose a quiet corner of your home or a special place in nature to build the altar.
Cleanse the space with song or smoke, asking unwanted energies to depart.
Arrange the images and objects along with an offering of cake, fruit, alcohol, tobacco, or any other favored treats of those who have passed.
Write a letter including an appreciation of the gifts you have received through your blood and ask for any advice or support.
Pay attention to signs and dreams in the days ahead to receive guidance.
