This Full Moon I am Seeking the Water.
On Tuesday it snowed and I was so thankful to see the flakes falling from the sky. December was incredibly dry. Everyone I talk to all over the country shared about the lack of winter snow. And now with the wildfires raging in Los Angeles, where I briefly called home, I feel the ache for water more poignantly. I call in a prayer for calm winds, gentle waves, and plenty of rain and snow. I call in a prayer for everyone to find their way to healing the climate of our home, with care and policy and radical cultural shifts. I have been following some of the mutual aid efforts to help how I can from afar. I am doing my part to find my way.
I am playing with coaxing more movement back into the fluids of my own body.
A friend posted a silly meme on a group chat about a tradition of boasting through Solstice and the New Year about ridiculous feats one plans to accomplish in the coming year, rather than resolutions. Although the sentiment was shared with an great humor I found the invitation to be quite profound.
I've been musing on Becoming a River as my impossible boast for 2025. This is a grand quest and I am curious what will become of it. My musings on this are still nascent but I hope to share more of this quest as the year unfolds.
For me Becoming a River currently inspires:
Being in the moment, present and expansive
Flowing around obstacles and towards the future
Gently shaping space and creating containers
Adaptive, sometimes seeming still and others a crashing rapid
Life Affirming
Mirror to the heavens, with the milky way reflected in the shimmering ripples of the water
What is your grand, ridiculous, boastful, impossible quest for 2025? Share with me in the comments.
Cancer Full Moon Oracle Spread & Journal Prompts & Music
For years I made playlists and oracle spreads for my patrons on Patreon. I have compiled all of my Cancer Full Moon playlists into one prime playlist on Spotify.
You can find the original Patreon posts below if you are curious about the previous years of inspiration. I want to share them here as an offering, along with the Oracle Spread I am using under the light of this Moon to guide my own learnings and understandings.
The first Full Moon of 2025 finds herself in shining bright in her home sign of Cancer. Reaching her peak on the evening of the 13th there is ample opportunity to feel rising emotions with this watery, cardinal sign.
LISTEN Like a falling snow, what arrives today that will nourish you later?
FRACTAL Like a unique snowflake, what part of your genius is needed now?
PAUSE Like a silent winter night, where is the open space for rest?
Use these prompts with your favorite oracle or tarot deck, simply journal to the prompts, or let them move through your body as you listen to the music above. This offering is for you to take or leave as you please.
To tap into the Mother Archetype associated with the Cancer Full Moon I chose to draw from the Motherpeace Round Tarot Deck. First published in 1981, this is deck has become a classic. The booklet reads "Tarot is a form of Sacred Play" so let us play.
LISTEN Like a falling snow, what arrives today that will nourish you later?
When the snow falls, especially when it falls gently on a deep winter night, the world sounds different. There is a hush that envelops the trees and stones. Messages from the beyond seem easier to catch. When heavy snow tumbles from an overladen branch, or a chime rings in the wind, it carries with it a deeper meaning. This heightened hearing brought on by the blanket of snow was the inspiration for this question and a lived experience I hope to have many more times this season.
XVIII Moon
She rules the astral way and lights the soul's labyrinthine journey from darkness into the conscious light of day
I am at first drawn to the mirror of the woman's profile in the Moon, echoing the pose of the woman standing in the infinite waters. Then the labyrinth, then the waving shapes obscuring the boat and the horizon. The more I look the more I see, and what at first seemed like a spacious image is filled with detail- a portal, a crescent, a bird...
When I look out at the snow at first all I see is a blinding white, making everything seem flat and pure, but the more I pause and look the more I see the shimmer of each individual crystal, the prints of animals, the kiss of the wind as drifts and ripples. I feel today that spaciousness is not equivalent to empty, and the more space I cultivate today the more that will nourish depth in the days, weeks, and months to come.
FRACTAL Like a unique snowflake, what part of your genius is needed now?
It is well known that each snowflake is as unique as a fingerprint, an individual expression of water falling to the Earth. We too are individual expressions, with a unique combination of skills and callings and contracts in this lifetime. These come together and fractal out into our life leading the way to our path. Our feelings shape this path, and under the light of the Moon in Cancer I am curious how our feelings and our callings can dance together to be an offering for the world today.
6 of Discs
Success; enough energy and resources to share; receiving gifts
The six discs around the figures sharing touch in the image feels immediately abundant. Perhaps I have not one genius but many! I am reminded of the indigenous parable of not making a decision until at least six choice have been discussed, to avoid either/or thinking. Six geniuses feels similarly powerful and generative. We each have so much we can offer, from a kind word, to a story told, to a giving of food or shelter or money or time to those we share space with. This also feels like a mirror to the chapter I am writing for the Beauty Oracle this month on Patreon, 6 Revel in the Gems of Diversity.
PAUSE Like a silent winter night, where is the open space for rest?
I almost opted out of writing this post because the call to move inward to my own silent spaces was strong. However, here at this final card of writing and sharing, I am glad to have taken the time to muse on this moon for all of you who may still be reading. This final card feels like a gift and an invitation to align with the energy of Winter in its peaceful pose of night and rest.
Son of Discs
Son (air/earth): Focus; determination; hypnotism; lightness and penetration
So much green in this card, like a balm of earthy energy to the eyes. I am struck by the image of the bird assisting the archer pull back the string of the bow, as if the divine herself is aiding in the achievement of the goal. The action in this card feels somewhat at odds with the search for rest, but there is a lot of open space between the winter trees, naked before the blooming of Spring.
Focus creates space and rest. By choosing the one thing that is worth aiming for the mind and body can rest. All other options are distractions. A contrast to the plethora of options of the previous card, this feels like a dialing in to the genius. That even though there may be many gifts under this Moon, choosing one to set sights on will lead to the space and rest so desired, at least for this season.
