Announcing a New Zine Project!
52 Ripples, exploring the myth, magick, and miracle of water.
Submissions are open on a rolling basis. I am seeking offerings of spells, rituals, art, personal essays or gnosis, and poetry. The first issue is already in the works with an amazing submission by Artist Debra Jason, honoring the magick of TIDES.
This Full Moon I am Coming into Focus.
This moon cycle I've been working with the Celtic-Roman Goddess Brigantia and the River Nith. Brigantia is syncretized with Minerva, who was the Roman's version of the Greek Athena, who is a Goddess interwoven with justice, balance, and the sign of Libra. A few years ago Athena came into my life, demanding my attention and favor. At first I spurned the calling, not wanting to associate my magical practice with a Goddess so often linked with hating other women and hero worship. However, after she appeared again in a terribly vivid dream I couldn't ignore her any more and I dedicated myself for a spell to Athena, in her guise as a Goddess of Craft. In learning more about her I saw that the “woman-hater” motif was simply one way to spin this powerful figure and that there is a lot more to be found in her mythos if you look closely.
I am discovering new meanings and connections with my Creative Kin.
This year, instead of a vision board, I am crafting vision rivers inspired by a desire to become creative kin with the rivers and goddesses of my ancestors. This moon I was compelled to work with the River Nith, which runs through my mother's home town of Dumfries. Any goddess that was originally linked to the river has been lost to time, but as I researched I discovered that one of the few remaining images of Brigantia (ie Minerva, ie Athena) was found in Birrens, off the shore of the River Nith, just a few miles south of Dumfries!
Brigantia, as she was petitioned at the Roman Fort, was a goddess of the cosmos and the waters. She appears with celestial wings, a gorgon headdress, and spear in one hand and orb of power in the other. In her other aspects she is a Nymph, a Healer, a Warrior, or a Winged Victory. I read a fascinating breakdown of all of her petitions across Roman-celtic archeological sites if you want to dive deeper with this ancient deity.
I am finding these Vision Rivers not only capture my desires, longings, hopes, and dreams but are also petitions to the Goddesses and Ancestors I have discovered along the way. With Brigantia I have found focus and momentum on my creative projects, and following the logic that my original devotion was to Athena Ergane, protector of craftspeople and craftmanship, its seems my call has been met. My latest zine project is taking flight with the first round of submissions received and the first draft for my Patrons on Patreon in the works. I had a wonderfully successful evening at the BAA First Friday event. And I am finally moving forward on a shrine project in my community ritual space!

Use these prompts with your favorite oracle or tarot deck, simply journal to the prompts, or let them move through your body as you listen to the music above. This offering is for you to take or leave as you please.
I was recently gifted the Spheres of Heaven Tarot. I’ve done a few one card draws from the deck. So far I have been impressed with the art and the messages I’ve received. I felt called to use the deck for the three card draw this full moon. As soon as I picked up the deck, it was clear that I needed to light a candle and settle my nervous system before drawing the cards. I took the time for that, and it felt soothing. I was thankful for the cards to give such a clear message on how they wanted to be drawn.
FLOW Like a rising current, what is pulling you into focus?
I unintentionally flipped the order of the questions between flow and ebb from the graphic I created, but I feel this order might suit me better and more accurately capture the rise and fall of the tides along the shore. With the full moon, it does feel like there is a rise in the current, and more opportunity for flow.
7 of Wands - Defiance
A breakthrough is near.
As I imagine the card intends, I am drawn to the central blooming wand with the halo around it. This card speaks to overcoming challenges, to making choices, and to focusing on the tender shoot that is hoping to rise above the others. I’ve spent the last several months, personally, narrowing down which projects and opportunities I want to focus on, and I feel affirmed in my choice to embark on a new project, 52 Ripples, with this card and the energies of this full moon supporting me. What projects, relationships or choices are seeking your attention and focus at this time?
EBB Like the receding tide, what part of yourself is ready to return home?
This question was inspired by Venus going Direct and the moon opposite Chiron. This moment, with the balancing act of libra‘s astrological influence, feels like a homecoming. There are so many parts of ourselves that can get pulled out into the wider energies of the world and distracted from matters of the heart. Retreating back into the temple of the body and noticing what feels at home there can be incredibly healing.
4 of Wands - Stability & Balance
The wands are the most authentic and straightforward suit.
In the introduction to this deck, it explained that these cards were developed originally for a game in a fantasy world. The creators were clear that they took influence from other tarot lineages beyond the Rider-waite Smith lexicon that dominates tarot culture. (as I’m writing this a nuthatch has landed on the tree outside my window, a sign to potentially look at things from a different perspective, just as this deck does.)
This card invites taking notice of a routine or a creative practice or an accomplishment that is serving you well. For me, I feel doubly affirmed in taking up the project of 52 Ripples because it is a very familiar form for my project to take. This is the fourth series in the same format, although this time about water instead of crystals or birds or flowers. At first, I wondered if I wasn’t pushing myself enough, returning to a form that I’ve practiced again and again and again. However, there is something restful about returning to a creative practice that has been generative and functional in the past, and to avoid stagnation I’m opening up the project to submissions from outside artists which I feel keeps the energy fresh and interesting. This feels like a homecoming, to return to a form that has been so satisfying for me in the past. I wonder for you what practices or routines from your past that have served you are ready to be reintegrated into your life in a fresh light.
FLOOD Like a surging wave, what is filling you with vitality and inspiration?
To bring this reading full circle this question was inspired by the river Nith, which is the focus of my vision river this month. The river has a tidal bore, which is a wave that surges up from the sea under certain tidal conditions. The first issue of 52 Ripples is all about Tides to honor this inspirational image from the river. I have a feeling of a wave rushing up from the sea, bringing nutrients and new life into my creative practice, just as the tidal bore shifts the current of the river for a brief period into a roaring wave. These images and metaphors of water are part of what is giving me vitality, and this question brings that further into focus.
The Emperor- Stability Reigns Supreme
No matter what chaos comes to pass, he has the power to be the axis at the center of things and bring soothing order when the world is disturbed, unhinged, and thrown into disarray. He can bring peace both to bodies and minds.
I sometimes find the third card in a three card draw simply reiterates what the previous two cards have already shared. It anchors the message, bringing even more clarity to the reading. For me this card points to the importance of routine and creative practice as part of self-care, and possibly community care if the routine is rooted with more than one person. Although it may look simple at first, the projects we dedicate ourselves to, and return to again and again, work to keep us stable so that when the world continues to spin in chaotic directions that dis-regulate and dismay us, we can return to that which we control, and that which brings us peace, and that which hopefully creates a ripple of positivity around us.
Be Well & Blessed Be ~Khiri
