This Full Moon I am Cultivating my Inner Garden.
Recently while reading and journaling and making art the glimmer of an idea came to me. What is in the underworld of my inner landscape? I've considered the rivers and the forest and the shores and meadows of this subconscious place, but I've never ventured deeper, into the dirt and loam, crust and core, and deep wells. This moon, with Venus and Mercury moving in retrograde, a total eclipse, and the amplified influences of dreamy Pisces, speaks to this underworld exploration. I also find with spring already stirring around me (The bulbs I planted for my birthday are beginning to sprout!) that intentionally planting seeds in this mythic subterranean space feels pertinent.
I am treading deeper into the underworld of my own inner landscape.
I'm making choices about which seeds to plant. Continue writing The Beauty Oracle, or start a new zine? Focus my efforts on art fairs and tables, or think more outside the box? Write content for social media or newsletters? Garden or sew? Dance or meditate? Draw cards or take a shower? Go to a rally or call my representatives? or both and give up on other pursuits?
There are so many ideas and possibilities about how I could spend my time, how the next several years could unfold, and I feel I need to make a conscious choice about what I water and fertilize. Especially with the pull on my attention by the chaotic and terrifying wider world. It serves no one for me to be unmoored from my truth and my power. Making the choices is part of resistance.
The last time there was total lunar eclipse in 2022 was the week I learned I was pregnant. My son is definitely a toddler now, and I feel I am entering a new phase of motherhood alongside the re-emergence of my art practice. I've already made choices with strong convictions, and I am ready to visualize those choices as seeds in the purple soil of my CHTHONIC terrains.
What flows in your personal underworld?
What seeds are you planting?
What choices do they represent?
Virgo Full Moon Oracle Spread & Journal Prompts & Music
For years I made playlists and oracle spreads for my patrons on Patreon. I have compiled all of my Virgo Full Moon playlists into one prime playlist on Spotify.
You can find the original Patreon posts below if you are curious about the previous years of inspiration. I want to share them here as an offering, along with the Oracle Spread I am using under the light of this Moon to guide my own learnings and understandings.
This Full Moon is bubbling with life changing potential. The first of three Blood Moon Eclipses, the Stellium of Pisces, and Venus in her Retrograde all swirl together to shake up the waters and make space in the earth. Explore this three card spread for deeper insights during the Eclipse.
PRUNE Like a dormant fruit tree, what could be cut away before the dawn of spring?
PLANT Like a seed, which of your ideas needs darkness, water, and dirt to thrive?
POLISH Like a gem revealed from the depths, what is your gift from the underworld?
Use these prompts with your favorite oracle or tarot deck, simply journal to the prompts, or let them move through your body as you listen to the music above. This offering is for you to take or leave as you please.
I followed my intuition in picking the deck for the intensity of the Blood Moon Eclipse. First I felt drawn to go to my tarot chest and pick up all my decks. The Alleyman Tarot and Faerie Oracle both held good energy. Then I touched the cards in each deck, receiving the clear message that the Faerie Oracle had a message for after the Eclipse, where as the Alleyman Tarot had one for before. The Alleyman Tarot deck has a high level of chaos, including cards from dozens of different decks, as well as multiples of cards like The Star and Death. It also was very clear that as I use the deck I should cycle in and cycle out cards to keep the energy alive. Sometimes a stray tarot or playing card comes into your life, and when that happens for me I now have a home for those errant cards. Some of the cards in this reading were added by myself.
PRUNE Like a dormant fruit tree, what could be cut away before the dawn of spring?
Any time there is an eclipse there is a lot of chatter about letting go or closing the door on something in the past. I sometimes find this level of finality daunting, especially when there aren't life changing happenings in my own life. However, these last few weeks before the Spring Equinox are a perfect time to finalize any pruning of bushes or fruiting trees before they begin to bud in the warmer days. The thought of pruning in the last days of winter cold feels less final and more approachable, especially when visualizing the forests and orchards of the inner landscape, rather than literal habits, values, relationships, or any of the other usual suggestions when "letting go."
Page of Pentacles, Nine of Diamonds, & Green Goddess Card
I return to center over and over again. I listen speak and choose from this place of wholeness.
I wouldn't normally draw so many cards for one question, but these three fell together and made a natural trio. The Nine of Diamonds was even stuck face down to the Page of Pentacles, as if the cards were in an embrace.
These three cards together speak of stepping away from anything that isn’t on your true path. To cut away distractions or remove any points of view that might be clouding your clarity. They tell a story of settling down into your roots and then from that place of complete and utter groundedness see which option is the strongest branch. Cut away twigs and suckers that aren’t connected to your truest pursuit in this chapter of your life and see what unfolds in the space of making one clear choice.
PLANT Like a seed, which of your ideas needs darkness, water, and dirt to thrive?
Some choices need a little space before they are ready to spring into life. The space of the metaphoric darkness of our subconscious is a wonderful place to plant seeds for hopes, dreams, and intentions. Focusing on one seed to plant deeply and intentionally often leads to the best results. A theme of focusing in and pulling back energy from all the wonderful, complex, or sometimes not wonderful options of how and where to spend your time seems to be resonating for this lunation.
The Rubberducky, fool, & The Star (lost card).
The Fool feels playful, experimental, and quixotic. In the star card, I’m drawn to the cave rather than the star, to journey deeper and bring my aspirations close to home rather than seeking far out and beyond myself to new horizons for the answers. I also noticed the deer, which for me has always been a symbol of adventure, making me wonder about adventuring into the underworld or close to home.
Some dreams are a place. A place made new by different people or perspectives or seasons. Take your biggest hope. Ember it where you wish to see it thrive. Let the worms and the water and the starlight find it there while it takes root. Every new idea or adventure starts with discomfort as we stretch beyond what we know. This is a good place to be, with our hands in novel ground touching that which is wild and full of potential.
POLISH Like a gem revealed from the depths, what is your gift from the underworld?
When you first pull something out of the subterranean depths, like a carrot or a diamond, it may not looks appealing at first. However, with a bit of water and polish the magic and beauty of that discovery can become potent, a gift for the world to delight in, something that nourishes and enlivens. Looking beyond the surface to find the true beauty takes time and dedication.
Frost
In the book it says frost is memory. It considers the way we wait and look back on something and the all the details are soften. To me this card feels like a gift of healing an old story or an old memory, bringing it out of the cold underworld into the light of the present moment. To garner new insight and lessons and gifts from this experience. To polish off the harsh cold to see in a new light what happened.
Our memories are fallible and in some ways this is a great gift because we can reshape our past with each recalling in the present. We are each older and wiser now and can touch these memories with the Grace of where we are now. I do not feel this is an invitation to be delusional or to dig up old pains that would cause trauma in their remembering, but to look back for a nugget of time that has crystallized in a way to bring new meaning and into your life today.
